Beautiful piece. I especially enjoyed the chapter that didn't make it into the novel. And I can't stop staring at the black and white photo of The Apache Kid. His eyes are so alive, and there's weltschmerz but also a stoicism in them that is hard to fathom, given the horrible injustice that was done to him and his people in general.

Thanks for reading, glad you enjoyed it. Yes, for that novel I was immersed in the "Wild West" for three year's worth of research - and I experienced that intensity from countless b/w pix. It was the period that "made" the US, with the gold and silver rushes - and it was a time that, to this day, has not seen justice for American Indians. I'd like to see movies about American Indians, and I'd like their world, their history and their sense of nature to be taught in schools. We could learn a great deal from the respect they showed to Mother Earth.
